In Bellwright, Trust represents your relationship with a specific village, while Renown is the resource used when expanding your recruited workforce. Raise Trust where the recruits, professions, quests, and regional progress you need are located; preserve Renown for villagers who solve a real settlement bottleneck.

Short answer: complete useful village work to improve local standing, earn Renown through normal rebellion progress, and recruit only after food, housing, tools, and a job are ready.

Trust and Renown are different

These systems often appear together during recruitment, but they answer different questions:

SystemWhat it representsBest planning question
TrustYour relationship and progression with one villageWhich village should I help next?
RenownThe recruitment value available to grow your causeWhich worker is worth adding now?

High Renown does not replace a village relationship requirement. Likewise, strong local Trust does not make every recruit free. Use the requirements shown by the current game's village and recruitment interfaces as the authority for exact thresholds and costs.

How to raise village Trust efficiently

Focus on work that advances more than one objective:

  1. Accept village quests that match your current route or resource plan.
  2. Clear threats that block travel, trade, or regional stability.
  3. Deliver requested support without emptying essential settlement stock.
  4. Build appropriate village improvements when they become available.
  5. Prepare for liberation only after the home settlement can support it.

Avoid scattering effort across every village at once. Build enough standing in one area to unlock the recruit or progression step you need, then reassess.

How to spend Renown well

Treat every recruit as a recurring operating cost, not only a one-time purchase. Before committing Renown, check:

  • a valid bed or housing place exists;
  • the food system has a positive stock trend;
  • the recruit has a defined primary role;
  • tools and work orders are ready;
  • their profession or skills address a current need;
  • adding them will not create more hauling than output.

The recruitment guide turns that check into a complete hiring process.

Which village should you improve first?

Choose the village with the strongest immediate connection to your plan:

  • it has a recruit or profession needed for research;
  • its quests overlap with your current exploration route;
  • liberation would improve the region you already operate in;
  • it can become a useful trade partner;
  • supporting it reduces travel between the settlement and the next objective.

A village is not automatically the best target because it is closest. It should shorten the next several progression steps.

Recruitment or saving Renown?

Recruit when the new villager will begin useful work immediately. Save when:

  • food is unstable;
  • the candidate duplicates a role that is already well covered;
  • you are waiting for a profession required by research;
  • the settlement lacks housing or tools;
  • the real bottleneck is layout, storage, or a missing input rather than labor.

Adding another general worker cannot repair a production chain with nowhere to store its output.

Trust after liberation

Donkey Crew's official village-system notes state that ringing the Belltower to begin liberation grants maximum Trust with that village and triggers the Brigand response. This is a major progression step, not a shortcut to take before the settlement and combat group are ready.

Use the village liberation guide before treating the Belltower as the next Trust objective.

Why a villager is still unavailable

If a candidate remains locked, inspect each condition separately:

  1. Is your Trust with that specific village high enough?
  2. Do you have the Renown shown by the current interface?
  3. Does the candidate have a profession or liberation requirement?
  4. Is recruitment being attempted through the correct interaction?
  5. Does the settlement meet any displayed support requirement?
  6. Has the game's current update changed the candidate or requirement?

Do not rely on an old list of names and costs. Recruitment availability can change during Early Access.

Trust, professions, and research

Donkey Crew's Villagers overview explains that professions affect attributes and can be required for specific technologies. This means village relationship work can be part of the research path.

Before grinding Trust without a plan, inspect the research priority guide, identify the profession that blocks the chosen branch, and focus on villages that can help solve that requirement.

A practical progression loop

  1. Identify the next settlement or research bottleneck.
  2. Check which recruit, profession, or village system can remove it.
  3. Work on Trust in the relevant village while earning normal Renown.
  4. Stabilize housing, food, and tools before recruitment.
  5. Recruit and assign the role immediately.
  6. Observe whether the bottleneck actually improves.
  7. Preserve the next Renown spend until a new need is clear.

Common mistakes

Recruiting everyone currently affordable

Population without roles increases consumption and management work.

Raising Trust everywhere equally

Broad progress feels productive but can delay the profession or liberation that matters most.

Emptying settlement stock for village requests

Complete support work from a planned surplus, not from the food or tool reserve that keeps workers active.

Liberating only to bypass Trust progression

Liberation creates combat and post-liberation responsibilities. Prepare for the entire transition.
